Our Fishball Stories: Reviewing Our Favourite Fish Ball Noodles At Jalan Tua Kong
The reigns of the famous Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok has always been disputed, with many of Singapore’s own food bloggers and foreign foodies debating which fish ball noodle stall holds the title of best Mee Pok in the east coast of Singapore. This chinese teochew dish has been around for decades, feeding the many residents in Singapore, and especially the east coast. From Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim, which just relocated from Simpang Bedok to 248 Tanjong Katong Rd, to Jalan Tua Kong Fish Ball Noodles located within the Kwek Seng Huat Eating House, we have tried them all. Our favourite, however, still holds to the one situated next to Jalan Tua Kong itself, the famous Ah Lim Mee Pok Kway Teow Soup at Soy Eu Tua coffeeshop along 15 Upper East Coast Rd.

You get a choice of 5 different types of noodles, 3 serving sizes, and your choice of spiciness and acidity with black vinegar. The ordering process is fairly straightforward if you have a regular go-to option, if you are a first-timer, take some time to consider before ordering as these traditional hawkers always prioritise efficiency in ordering from their customers. We went with the mee pok or flat yellow noodle option and also the mee tai mak (米筛目) option to experience how the different textures combined with the other ingredients and condiments within the hearty bowl of fish ball noodles.
Fish Balls & Fish Cakes
The fish balls were regular-sized with a fresh seafood umami flavour and nice bouncy texture. This version of fish ball noodles had thicker cuts of sliced fish cakes for a better bite and tasting experience. The fish surimi elements went well with both the mee pok and mee tai mak for an overall lightly acidic, savoury, and tasty bowl of fish ball noodles.
If you have noticed, this jalan tua kong fish ball noodles contains a complementary amount of pork lard, large chunks of minced meat, and a few slices of boiled pork. These additional elements can also be found with other versions of the tua kong mee pok, but Ah Lim Mee Pok’s take on this is perfect for us as the pork ingredients are blanched with precise timing to get the right soft chewy texture of the meat.
Ah Lim Mee Pok is definitely our go-to at the east coast area for Fish Ball Noodles, let us know what your favourite Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok version is!
